Don't Let This Happen To You

The previous entry is the error message I got, and long (and stupid, irrtating) story short... the mini failed badly a week ago while I was burning a CD and now I've got a fresh new hard drive and superdrive and am back to square one. It didn't fail altogether and I do have a backup of some or most of my data -- but have to install everything from scratch again.

Grr.

I'm taking the opportunity to upgrade to Leopard. First order of business is remapping the keyboard so the mini works properly with my Unicomp Model M (which I got for Christmas last year and am so, so happy with).

Last time I did this I used a third-party solution, which was fine except when it wasn't. This time around, Google points me to this fine article which can be summarized with these clues:

System Preferences > International > Input Menu and enable the Keyboard Viewer, click the flag in the menu bar and show the keyboard, try stuff for awhile and then... System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse and click Modifier Keys. It's all built-in!

Now back to the task of reinstalling and rebuilding... not much fun but everything will be shiny and new. My New Mac Redux.
